Club Championships Day 4 - Open Singles - 16 May 2017

Double Magic!

The 2017 Club Championships concluded on Tuesday with the Open Singles.

Eleven players were allocated into three groups with the winners of each group progressing to a final group to determine the destiny of the medals. All three seeds made it through: defending champion Ricky Hardcastle, 2015 champion Shae Thakker and Maciej “Magic” Dlogozima although Magic had to recover from 2-1 down to defeat Graham Trimming whose hopes had already been dented by losing in the fifth to Keith Hall.

Once into the final stage, Magic stepped up a gear and beat both Ricky and Shae 3-1 although Shae did hold 10-6 in the fourth game and was therefore desperately close to taking the match to a decider. Magic thus completed the “double” having also triumphed with Lawrence Harvey in the Open Doubles the previous week. Shae took the runners-up medal by beating current Maidenhead League Men’s Singles champion Ricky 3-0.

Grateful thanks are due to Megan Ashfield who ably run the event on the day while organiser Elena Tant was deservedly being awarded the Hugh Bartholomew Trophy for her services to table tennis in Maidenhead at the local league’s Annual General Meeting.
