Club Championships Day 2 - 27 April 2023

Day 2 of the 2023 annual Club Championships was set aside for the Open Doubles event. A good entry of fifteen pairs were arranged in four preliminary round groups with the four group winners progressing to the semi-finals and the remaining pairs playing off for the minor placings.

A changing of the guard is taking place at Cippenham with the younger generation of junior players coming to the fore and the more established players being left behind. Maciej Dlugozima, who has won virtually everything locally this and in recent seasons, was partnered by Michal Garski but any expectations they had of winning this event were swiftly dismissed in the semi-final when they were beaten 3-1 by youngsters Rachael Iles and Anna Piercey. Both girls have progressed up the senior and junior national rankings this season to the point where Rachael is now ranked as high as 33 in England senior women.

It was similar in the other half of the draw in which two of Cippenham's most promising boys, Jamie Woodford and George Driscoll, defeated the old guard Bas Mocharrafie and Igor Liiko in the semi-final 3-0. The final was a close encounter and Jamie and George opened up a 2-1 lead before Rachael and Anna stormed back to win the fourth and fifth games to take the title 3-2.
